3D laser scanners can generally be categorized into three main types based on their operating methods: terrestrial, airborne, and mobile. Terrestrial 3D laser scanners are the most common type, typically mounted on a tripod and scanning the surrounding environment from all angles through horizontal and vertical rotation. They are suitable for applications such as architectural surveying, engineering monitoring, and cultural relic preservation, characterized by high accuracy and detailed data, but their operational range is relatively limited.

 

Airborne 3D laser scanners are mounted on aircraft, drones, or helicopters, using an aerial platform to rapidly scan large areas of terrain with a laser system. These devices are suitable for topographic surveying, forest resource investigations, and urban 3D modeling, offering advantages such as wide coverage and high efficiency. However, due to the influence of flight altitude and platform stability, data accuracy is usually slightly lower than that of terrestrial scanners.

 

Mobile 3D laser scanners are mounted on vehicles or backpack platforms, continuously acquiring spatial data while in motion, achieving dynamic scanning. They are commonly used for tasks such as urban street surveying, road inspection, and rapid indoor modeling, characterized by high mobility and operational efficiency, capable of quickly acquiring continuous 3D point cloud data in complex environments.
